The tool allows you to set a trajectory for emission reduction. But before getting started, there are a few steps to follow.
Prerequisites
Before considering setting a trajectory, it is necessary to have a sufficiently precise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. That is to say, with enough detail in the collected data and little uncertainty. This notably implies having few data related to emission factors in monetary ratios.
Additionally, the calculation method used during GHG emissions calculation must be compatible with the methodology chosen for the trajectory. For example, if you choose to set an SBTi trajectory, your GHG emissions inventory must be prepared according to the GHG-Protocol methodology.
Categorization of data
There are already global trajectories set up in the tool, but it is important to categorize your emissions. The objectives are more ambitious for scope 1&2 (where an organization has the most responsibility) than for the minimal scope 3 (where it has shared responsibility with stakeholders).
In the tool, this means tagging your data according to the emission categories considered in the methodology. For example, taking SBTi as an example, we will create a tag "scope SBTi" which will have the values "Scope 1&2", "Scope 3 minimal perimeter" and "Scope 3 optional perimeter." To tag your data, you can refer to this article to create a tag, then this article to associate these tags with data.
Choice of reference year and deadline
Today, in order to set a trajectory in the tool, you need to determine a unique reference year, as well as a deadline. The reference year must have a carbon balance that meets the criteria mentioned in the "Prerequisites" section.
The deadline year is generally set to 2030 for short-term objectives, and 2050 for long-term objectives.
Setting the trajectory in the tool
Once you have determined the necessary categorizations to define your trajectory, as well as the associated percentages, you can proceed to set them in the "Your reduction objectives" part of the Climate Strategy tab.
First, enter the reference and deadline years you have determined. You can then choose whether your trajectory is defined at the scale of your overall carbon balance or based on the data categorization tag you defined earlier in the Categorization of data step.
Choose your tag, you will then see a percentage reduction to fill for each tag value. Fill them in according to the chosen methodology.
Once they are filled out, your trajectory updates:
Congratulations, you have set your trajectory! You can now validate your objectives and move on to defining ambitions and constructing your action plan.
